Coming back to Australia in 1990 after spending a couple of years being completely seduced by Viennese cakes and coffee houses, I thought it would be fun to replicate that way of life here in Sydney.

Since I've a raging sweet tooth I opted for making the cakes, and not going the coffee shop route. So with a childhood friend we hired a tiny space (a corridor really) at the back of a corner store in Darlinghurst, bought a pizza  oven and a mixer – and “The Good Food Company” opened for business!

We called it The Good Food Company because we only wanted to use good food, real food, food that tasted as it was meant to. Also because were so small, we were trying to sound bigger than we actually were!

As the business grew, we moved first to North Bondi (and got rid of the pizza oven and old mixer), and then to our current location in Botany.

In 2008 we decided to change the name, packaging, and the way we communicate to better reflect who we are and what we stand for. We aren’t a big corporation; we don’t have rows and rows of conveyer belts churning out identical products. And we don’t ever want to be that.

We don't have a huge factory – we have a commercial kitchen, we don't use computer operated machinery – every single product is hand made, we don't use artificial flavours or powder alternatives – we use the freshest ingredients possible , real butter, eggs & cream. Really!

Our new name is “Yael’s Cakes Of Distinction.” I'm putting my name on the box as a sign of my personal commitment to quality.

Yael's Cakes of Distinction will only be baking products that I would be happy to share with my own family and friends. And that has always been the case.

We have taken our inspiration from the great patisseries of Paris, Prague & Vienna.  We use the best and freshest ingredients available and make our cakes by hand, from scratch.  The key ingredient that we have added – apart from our own imaginations! – is Australian dairy products, whose high quality is recognised worldwide.

We are busy creating cakes that could proudly be displayed on the shelves of the best European stores.  But more importantly, when you taste one of Yael's Cakes of Distinction, we want you to know that you are enjoying a cake made with love, care and a commitment to putting a big smile on your face!
